Chandra Temperature Maps for Galaxy Clusters with Radio Halos

چکیده
This presentation is based on the paper by Govoni et al. (2004). We derived Chandra temperature maps for a sample of clusters with high-quality radio halo data, to study the origin of the radio halos. All the sample clusters exhibit distorted X-ray morphology and strong gas temperature variations indicating ongoing mergers. Some clusters, e.g., A520, A665, 1E0657 56, exhibit spatial correlation between the radio halo brightness and the hot gas regions. However, it is not a general feature. We find clear counterexamples (e.g., A754 and A773) where the hottest gas regions do not exhibit radio emission at the present sensitivity level. This cannot be explained by projection effects, and therefore argues against merger shocks — at least those relatively weak ones responsible for the observed temperature structure in most clusters — as the main mechanism for the halo generation. This leaves merger-generated turbulence as a more likely mechanism. The two clusters with the clearest radio brightness – temperature correlation, A520 and 1E0657 56, are both mergers in which a small dense subcluster has just passed through the main cluster, very likely generating turbulence in its wake. The maximum radio brightness and the hot gas are both seen in these wake regions. On the other hand, the halos in 1E0657 56, A520 and A665 (all three high-velocity mergers) extend into the shock regions in front of the subclusters, where no strong turbulence is expected. Thus, in high-velocity ( 2–3) mergers, both shock and turbulence acceleration mechanisms may be significant.

Merger Shocks in Galaxy Clusters A665 and A2163 and Their Relation to Radio Halos
We present Chandra gas temperature maps for two hot, intermediate-redshift clusters A665 and A2163. Both show strong temperature variations in their central r = 0.5h−1 Mpc regions, naturally interpreted as product of the subcluster mergers. The A665 map reveals a shock in front of the cool core, while the temperature structure of A2163 is more complicated. On a larger linear scale, our data on ...
متن کاملA Flux Limited Atlas of Galaxy Cluster Temperature Maps
An atlas of gas temperature maps is presented for a flux limited catalog of galaxy clusters. The sample of clusters is based on the Edge et al. (1990) sample, with the inclusion of five additional clusters, all with fluxes fX(2 − 10 keV) ≥ 1.7 × 10 −11 ergs sec cm, drawn from a variety of other sources. The temperature maps are derived from ASCA GIS observations using a common methodology to co...

We report the discovery of spatially-extended, non-thermal or hot, quasi-thermal emission components in Chandra X-ray spectra for five of a sample of seven massive, merging galaxy clusters with powerful radio halos: Abell 665, 2163, 2255, 2319, and 1E 065756. The emission components can be fitted by power-law models with mean photon indices in the range 1.4 < Γ < 2.0, or by bremsstrahlung emiss...

Recent results on the radio emission from galaxy clusters are reviewed, with emphasis both on the radio galaxies and on the diffuse radio emission from the intracluster medium. We show that the formation of the tailed morphology in cluster radio galaxies is due to the effect of the cluster gaseous environment and of its large scale motions in merging clusters. From Chandra X-ray data, it has al...
